Prior to being re-built in 2011, the Booker T. Washington Elementary School hosted a mural painted by fifth grade students in 2002 on Washington and his legacy.
Shauna Carey, Art Teacher at Booker T. Washington, describes the project in the following way: "The mural was painted with a group of eight 5th grade students as an enrichment project in 2002. The kids decided on the images and events that made our school unique. I drew the mural with their input and they painted it. We worked once a week for about a semester on it. A parent suggested the quote from Booker T. Washington and it fit with our school philosophy so it seemed the right quote to use."
