Located in Champaign, IL, the Champaign Urbana Public Health District offers a wide variety of health, safety, and wellness resources to the local community. Their three main goals are
- "to prevent disease, injury and disability,
- to promote healthy lifestyles,
- to provide early diagnosis for improved health outcomes and reduced health care costs."1
The Champaign Urbana Public Health District is comprised of five major areas covering:
- Maternal and child health, including pregnancy and post-pregnancy services, pregnancy tests, child safety seat information, help for teen parents, illness screenings and immunizations, nutrition, and health care;
- Dental services and information for children and teens;
- Infectious disease prevention and management, with resources on HIV/AIDS, other STDs, and tuberculosis;
- General wellness and health promotion, with information on diabetes, smoking cessation, and gynecological cancers (e.g., cervical cancer, breast cancer), as well as services regarding children's vision, hearing, and other medical/emotional needs.
- In addition, an Environmental Health department inspects and/or regulates food safety, private sewage systems, private water wells, body art establishments (that is, tattoo and piercing shops), and tanning facilities. This department also handles lead poisoning prevention, radon detection, and mosquito control, and offers information on recycling and hazardous waste.
