Describe Community Choir - Martin Luther King, Jr. Advocacy for Justice Celebration here
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir is sending out a call for local singers to join us for our once-a-year performance at the MLK Community Celebration at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, January 20, 2013.
The Community Choir is a diverse and inclusive group led by strong choir directors from multiple area churches. It is ideal for anyone who has ever been curious about, enjoyed listening too, or desired the opportunity to sing in a gospel choir. It is also an opportunity for those who yearn to reach across the racial divide and fellowship with others in a gospel music setting.
The Community Choir anchors the MLK Service of Celebration and is a yearly highlight for those who sing in it. It has been held annually since 1986, and features inspirational speakers from around the country who honor Dr. King’s legacy. It is also where the MLK “Living the Dream” scholarship winners are honored. The program offers $1,000 scholarships, which is renewable up to 4 years, for students entering college who have demonstrated a commitment to Dr. King’s principles in their lives. Since 1988, the committee has awarded over 200 scholarships to students attending the University of Illinois, as well as a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Big hearts are just as valuable as strong voices, so we encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and come live Dr. King’s dream with us during December and January!
Choir rehearsals will be on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on December 15th, 22nd & 29th, and January 5th, 12th & 19th at Salem Baptist Church, located at 500 E. Park St., Champaign.
In addition, if your church does not already financially support the MLK scholarship fund, we would appreciate your consideration during end of year budgeting and giving. Financial support would greatly help our ability to fund these deserving yet financially disadvantaged students. Checks can be made out to “MLK Living the Dream Scholarship” and sent to Salem Baptist Church, 500 E. Park Street, Champaign, IL 61820.
We look forward to celebrating with you at Community Choir rehearsals, and on January 20, 2013; at the celebration itself. May God’s grace be with you!
