History

There is a small yet vibrant Filipino community in the Champaign-Urbana area. According to a 2012 Vivelo Hoy article by Jeff Kelly Lowenstein, the Filipino community in CU is "steadily growing but little-chronicled." Prior to the 1990s, there were very few Filipinos in the CU area; in 1996, Swann Special Care Center brought over nurses from the Philippines. Since then, the influx of Filipinos has continued, with more hospitals and medical centers bringing Filipino nurses to CU.

Campus Community

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is home to a Philippine Student Association (PSA). According to the PSA's website, their mission is to promote education of the Filipino culture and to aid in the leadership and academic development of the Filipino student community. PSA hosts events and service projects.
