Cole Hardware is a family-owned independent business with four locations in San Francisco. The place was rather obviously named for its original location, which is still on Cole Street. The business started in 1959 when current Cole Hardware president Rick Karp's father, Dave Karp, bought the store, and it grew when the senior Karp opened a second location at the base of Bernal Heights in 1984. In 1996 the company acquired Fox Hardware and renamed it Cole Fox Hardware. The business' slogan is "There are no strangers here, just friends we haven't met."
The stores' display windows are traditionally decorated very attractively with products sold within.
